Put into motion in 1940, the Step Up Plant of Traição has as function to reverse the waters flows of the Tietê and Pinheiros rivers, so that they are directed to the Step Up Plant of Pedreira and, after that, to the Billings Reservoir. The plant includes four reversing units, which can operate as energy generators and as pumps, equipped with vertical shaft Kaplan rotor turbines, activated by synchronous motors. The pumping capacity is 280 cubic meters/s, stepping up the water level
in approximately 5 meters. From the energy standpoint, the reversion of the river has the objective to maintain the water volumes in the Rio das Pedras and Billings reservoirs, at sufficient levels in order to ensure the generation at Henry Borden Power Plant . Currently, the operation of the reversing system of the Pinheiros River is activated solely for the control of floods.
